Hakia Search - Don’t Tell Anyone!

hakia

When I clicked on the above sponsored listing that appeared in Google, I was a bit curious to see what’s new in hakia… and to my pleasant surprise, there were tons of new features present among search results…. organized in different tabs like Headlines, Basic Information and FAQ, How it Works, History, and so on… but when i want through each of them, I found most of them to be useless, and not very much relevant to what I searched for…

I quickly typed in ‘president of india’ and was disappointed to still see Abdul Kalam’s name again and again as in Google, Yahoo and MSN. I tried a few more keywords including my name, and a few tech terms… but couldn’t find anything interesting in Hakia :(

And, as they’ve said in their ad… I decided not to tell about Hakia.com to anyone.

Truth about Google Search Results

When I search ’search engine’ in google, I would be happy to see results in the following order…

#1 Google.com
#2 Yahoo.com
#3 Live.com
#4 Ask.com
and so on…. because I’m very sure that these are the top search engines as on date..

But interestingly, google ranks searchenginewatch.com as its #1 result instead of ranking itself as #1. Though searchenginewatch.com offers a great deal of information about search engines, it is not the result that a normal user expect while searching for a ’search engine’.

Google also seems to be stupid enough to rank its own competitor search.live.com within Top10 rankings, without even ranking itself in the first page. If this is the case, then it clearly means that Google needs SEO for itself :) and also indicates that Google’s ranking algorithm might probably be inaccurate.

Google Webmaster Message Center

The Google Webmaster Central team has come up with a great way to communicate with webmasters, which will put an end to all those confusions over spoof emails that were pretended to be sent from Google to Site owners and Web Masters.

Google’s Webmaster console will now have a Message Center, which is a better way for Google to communicate with webmasters in 10+ languages.

This is what Google has to say about it

Initially the messages will refer to search quality issues, but over time we’ll use the Message Center as a communication channel for more types of information. Here’s an example: informing the site owner about hidden text, a violation in our webmaster guidelines.

To start-with, the number of sites Google will be contacting will be small, but should expand over time. The most important factor is that this ‘Message Center’ will allow Google to communicate with webmasters in an authenticated way, and as time goes on, Google should be looking for even more ways to improve communication with site owners.

Dynamic keyword insertion issues in Content Match

At times, your Google ad. that uses dynamic keyword insertion can be displayed on Google Partner sites that use Google Adsense with awkward titles like the one shown in the below image, with the ad. title saying Keywords:Jokes instead of displaying just Jokes. This looks like a technical flaw on part of Google Adwords system, and there seems to be nothing wrong in the way that the campaign is created.

google

Thus, to ensure that your ad. doesn’t get displayed like this… make sure you turn off Content Match for the time-being in all those campaigns in which you have ad. copies that use dynamic keyword insertion till Google fix this issue…

China develops new search engine technology

Scientists from the Taiyuan University of Technology, Liu Wei and Chen Junjie, have developed a technology which might return better results based on users search query. Though the technology seems to be nothing new and relates to meta search, the team believes that their “intelligent agent search” can return accurate results when a search for something like “apple” will only return fruit related results (instead of Apple computers) when that’s what people were looking for.

The Chinese government has a long standing policy of censoring its Internet population. Decisions to remove content from search engines by companies like Google, for example, have been front page news. Still, those imposed limitations have not stopped scientists there from creating new technologies, which are designed to provide the foundation for more accurate searches.

Yahoo Launches SmartAds

Can Yahoo Make Display Ads Work More Like Search? Yes; With SmartAds, Yahoo is tapping into user behavior to help advertisers target ads in a more personalized way.

For example, a Web user who has shown an interest in certain car models and who logged on from a computer in Los Angeles could receive an ad for that vehicle that combines information on their nearest dealership and a real-time feed of inventory levels

This SmartAds system includes new software from Yahoo that assembles the ads from information provided by the advertiser. Behavioral targeting has been the focus for the Internet giants, many of which have offered large sums for online advertising firms that help track Web users’ habits. This year, Google made a bid to purchase DoubleClick, Microsoft announced its plans to try to snap up aQuantive, and Yahoo bought Right Media.
