Build your Own Search Service - Yahoo BOSS

Yahoo is taking the next step in its “open” strategy with the launch today of BOSS: Build your Own Search Service. The BOSS program will allow third parties to build their own search engine using Yahoo’s index and ranking methodologies as a base.

The goal of BOSS is simple: to foster innovation in the search industry. Developers, start-ups, and large Internet companies can use BOSS to build and launch web-scale search products that utilize the entire Yahoo! Search index. BOSS gives you access to Yahoo!’s investments in crawling and indexing, ranking and relevancy algorithms, and powerful infrastructure. By combining your unique assets and ideas with our search technology assets, BOSS is a platform for the next generation of search innovation, serving hundreds of millions of users across the Web.

It’s a giant step beyond anything Google has done in open source. Google has released a ton of code, but not its search algorithm till now….

This is quite revolutionary, allowing access to the core of the search engine. I wonder how this relates to Microsoft attempt to buy a share of !Yahoo. Would they be still interested after this move ?

I think Microsoft will still try to buy Yahoo, as its any day good for Microsoft to fight Google with its new Yahoo guns, while the main investor in Yahoo wants this deal, the owners of Yahoo are trying to prove others that they are better off without Microsoft and the recent several launches of new mail system, Reviving AOL talks and now BOSS

Wow, is that sound I hear in the background Yahoo becoming relevant again?

I think this is a great move for them… Most of those “in the know” have basically abandoned them and this is a way to revive some interest and attention.

Its great and all that they do this but Google is the one that would be useful to have the search algorithm but of course that would never happen.

My opinion is that Microsoft will be trying to buy Yahoo! even after this, however it will never buy it.
