Knol - a unit of knowledge
A knol is an authoritative article about a specific topic.
Google has recently unveiled Knol to the world, touted as their answer to Wikipedia, which is expected to be a more professional version of Wikipedia, put together by expert writers. The biggest difference between Knol and Wikipedia are that the authors will be identified by their real names, and will be verified.
Authoritative articles in knol are expected to rank high in search engines, and could potentially be used as a link baiting tool to build links to your site. Though all outgoing links from knol have nofollow added to them, this is definitely going to be a major traffic source in future, and if used properly, this traffic could potentially get a few back links to your site.

I just heard from one of my team member during an internal meeting that knoll verifies the contributor by either credit card and phone call, which I think will be a key point for its success…

I like that they call Knol a ‘unit of knowledge’ but wikipedia is far superior and expansive.

So long as Knol doesn’t become spam central it will be cool. Almost like wikipedia. I’m still not really clear on how Knol is that different than wikipedia.

The verification failed several times when I tried it on the first day, and the two articles I spent hours on are not showing up. They really want to control everything dont they!

knol is the right thing which google initiated to compete with wiki and i guess it will do well in the coming years but at the same time it will be quite hard for google to the active users of wiki to leave it and join knol

I published several articles on knol. I think it is better than Wikipedia, noone can delete them because of no official sources and everything like that
