Google Engineers launch Search Engine - cuil.com

A startup business, Cuil Inc., founded by engineers from Google Inc. and other tech giants are launching a new search engine that claims to cover three times as many Web pages as Google. The site’s results page resembles an online magazine — a different look and feel from search juggernaut Google’s.

try www.cuil.com (pronounced “cool”)

Cuil has raised $33 million from venture-capital investors and has a deep bench of career search engineers, including Ms. Patterson and her co-founder and husband, Tom Costello. Mr. Costello built search technology for International Business Machines Corp. and was on the research faculty at Stanford University.

As a business proposition, Cuil is obviously a big bet. While search is a monetizable business, it’s hard to change the behavior of a generation of Web users who think “Google” is a verb. No other search engine has come close to entering the public consciousness like this. Of course, Cuil doesn’t have to trounce Google on day one; and took Google quite some time to surpass Alta Vista and Yahoo in the search wars.

simple; stick on to the basics :)

but it is too early to think about it; maybe we can plan after it gets some kind of reach…

Wow that is quite a venture, because Google has dominated society. They aren’t going to have to prove they are better they are going to have re-route user’s thinking completely make Cuil a social buzz word.

A new Google?! If they succeed it will be an amazing feat that the internet will talk about for generations to come. I wonder what their game plan is because that could be a really interesting business study to perform and learn from.

@ tknopsis the results are rough mainly because cuil.com uses dedicated search appliances for sub category’s. So basically one machine will index sports another will index medicine and when one of those boxes get’s overloaded the overflow pushed towards another box that is most likely does not specialize in that query. Hence why there were horrendous results.

I just tried them , most of the results pages are not working links, not sure about their results, have to wait and watch . We can still debate on why they did not launch as beta version ….

Cuil… has a catchy ring to it. I went and looked at it though and I just can’t seem to get into the layout, it frustrated me. Probably because I am so use to Google but still that is a big turn off for me

I’ve tried this search enginge, it has a long way to go. I can’t believe Google engineers could be this far off. I’m sure they’ll get better, but you would expect something more from Google engineers.

It looks like a simpler version and darker version of google. But, I don’t really like the search results appearance. I still prefer the one column list type. Obviously it is still new, hopefully they bring a new method that will stand equally against google.

I played around with Cuil and I didn’t like it at all. It didn’t fine almost any relevant information for my searches. And the name…Cuil….that even more lame than Flickr. I personally think that these venture capitalists can as well as take these 33 mills of their taxes.

It’s always a positive when there is competition and with $33 mil to work with these aren’t going away any time soon. So they will have their opportunity to take some market share.

That said, the layout is confusing and the results seem weak. I don’t know if you can beat the simple vertical list of single results. Searching is all about finding the most relevant results. So when you get results seem all over the place, they become irrelevant.

hmmm … I have to agree with you on the fact that it took G a while to surpass the big engines of that era. However, Cuil has a cool look, but its layout is not linear in fashion so the ranking order is confusing … are the serps ranked Top to Bottom and then the next column or as in rows across the columns? I have to admit that for the time being I am going to stick to the G — although I hate that their results are not in chronological order … I think if cool … sorry CUIL wants to be better thats one thing they will have to accomplish. Furthermore, I think whoever owns cool.com is going to be thanking them for years to come lol

I wouldn’t worry about optimizing a page for Cuil until they can keep their search engine fully functional.

I tried it and some of the search results were totally off. They still got a long way to go before they can become a major player in the world of search.
