Google lets users search like it’s 2001

As part of Google’s ongoing 10th birthday celebration, the company is providing access to a  2001 version of the Google search index, allowing users to search the Web circa January 2001. Although Google is officially celebrating its 10th birthday this year, due to various “technical reasons,” the oldest index it could easily access was the 2001 version.

Google has worked with the Internet Archive project, which is aiming to preserve digital media to link with its cache of the pages from 2001 so users can see full versions of old Web pages.

    Happy birthday to Google.
It is a great thing they gave us opportunity to look back in 2001. The competition then is so funny.
Conclusion is they took 3 years to build archive for their indexes :).

That is kind of fun to look around the internet and see what types of things show up for different search terms. A search for ‘government bailout’ only had 43,100 pages in the index in 2001 whereas today it has 4,770,000. That is a big difference if you ask me!

It’s great that Google is keeping an archive of old search results and pages.

The Internet changes so quickly. Looking at sites just 7 years old is quite revealing about how important it is for us to keep up with all the new changes.

    Warmly,
