Local Search Results - Not so impressive?
Local search is the use of specialized Internet search engines that allow users to submit geographically constrained searches against a structured database of local business listings. Typical local search queries include not only information about “what” the site visitor is searching for but also “where” information, such as a street address, city name, postal code, or geographic coordinates like latitude and longitude. Examples of local searches include “San Francisco hotels”, “Los Angeles Seo Company“, and “Las Vegas Hertz”.
Above image shows google local results fot the search term los angeles seo, and it seems that 5 out of the 10 listing are being optimized (marked in red) by search professionals, and keywords are being displayed instead of business names….
And its not so impressive

It is happening and will happen for some more time period. Google needs to improve its algorithum to avoid this type of results. I think, Searchwiki is going to change this picture. Because people from LA will delete non-relevant entries in SERPs, and if google will consider this results, this picture will improve.

I have noticed that same thing for other locations. But im not sure if there is anything anyone can do. Even if Google does improve their algorithm i think the seo experts will just find another way to work around it so they can rank.

There is rampant abuse of Google Local. A common technique for spamming is to use different keyword-rich business names and use different phone extension numbers e.g. 9876-1001, 9876-1002, etc It doesn’t matter if the street address is the same, as a city office tower can hold hundreds of businesses.

Even worse is that in the top right corner of the SERP page you will see a thing that says google has personalized your search. If you check out Bruce Clay’s site he talks about it and I believe that web pro news has a bunch of video interviews with him talking about it.

hmm this is why i don’t really use local searches if i dont already have an idea for what im searching for. i’d much rather use google maps or text chacha if i was trying to find a restaurant in a strange city for example

In many occassions, depending on your niche market, the Google local search is indeed spammed. All ot needs is a different telephone number to get another listing in the local search.
I don’t think this is beneficial for the users of Google, for sure they want to see information about different companies so it makes it easier for them to compare.

As more and more information becomes available about how search engines work, this kind of exploitation of SEO will hopefully go away. SEO efforts control the flow of information on the internet, which directly impacts not only sales, but perception/branding. For small business owners to compete, they will have to educate themselves how to even the playing field against those who have greater resources!

@adam alfia - whilst I absolutely agree with you adam that it is the large companies who can potentially dominate the listings, I think it is one of Google’s strenghs that it has always seemed to not prejudice brands and companies which have a small, or even non-existant, off line profile. Of course that may have changed with somewhat with Vince, but I still feel that a small company whose online marketing / seo efforts focus on creating good quality content which people want to read (and have a little guidance of course) and have a little budget, which is well spent, have a good chance of playing the field against the largest ‘household names’ out there.
Maybe that’s too optimistic on my part, and I certainly agree that the Local Listings in Google are open to massive abuse at the moment. Not good.

Local search isn’t to bad in our area (West Midlands of the UK) but it has been a bit off in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Not sure why but I think it could be due to the numbers of businesses in that area. Where there’s not going to be many results Google fills it in with less relevant results to pad it out.

local search is really the most attractive and helpful feature of google but the output result is just like unfiltered one which makes the results chatic and confuses the user… if google improves this then it will be the best local search so far

Google will continue to change things as they always do. Of course it is necessary as many spammers take advantage of the way things are done. However SEO helps those who use it right and that is the way it should be, this gives the little guy an opportunity to compete where otherwise they would not be able to. Google just needs to work on rewarding those using SEO and providing quality content and getting rid of those using SEO in a negative way.

I also get irritate sometimes when i think and rethink that if i m on the first page first result on Google search engine covering my country then is it the same result others getting in their country Google or not then someone confirmed me that Google provide different results depending on the country search, i also get a firefox plugin from which you can have the searches from other countries for the specific keyword but sorry to admit that i forgot the name but it starts from “Global” something, lemme try this time and if i get it, i will comment the name here again, see ya
