Google helps predict hot search topics
Google has developed a formula to predict the hot topics of online search in what promises to be a boon for companies wishing to target ads that accompany search results on the Internet. Engineers at Google’s laboratory in Israel came up with a forecasting model, while the study of past and current search patterns are reliable clues to what people seek online in coming months. The findings resulted in a new function of the forecast this week for analysis of search in Google.
“We see many search trends are predictable, Yossi Matias, Niv Efron, Yair Shimshoni and the Google Labs in Israel, wrote in a message on the California titan’s website online. “We characterized the predictability of a number of trends on the basis of their historical development.”
Google Trends is a free online search shows what subjects are gaining in popularity or collapse. Outlook for search uses the same data, but is designed for advertisers and researchers who want to deepen. More than half of the most popular search queries on Google are predictable to the extent that a year earlier, with a margin of error of about 12 percent, according to the laboratory engineers Israel.
Categories such as health, travel, food and beverages are particularly predictable, while searches in connection with the entertainment and social networks have proven more difficult to predict, the team said.

Google Trends is a good tool, but so is Insights. I’ve found it quite handy.
In addition, I would suggest monitoring several social bookmarking sites to get a broader idea about what people are talking about. A little extra never hurts!

As with every tool that Google provides, you have to apply it regularly and read between the lines. Google is great for giving you just enough information to take a course of action, but finding out if it is the right course can only be determined after you have travelled it, not before.

As for link popularity? If you have a website make sure that you link the two together. Insert links to your site from your blog but don’t over do it as it will appear to be spamming.

I think google trend only try to make data of keywords performance in the past. There is sometimes that one keywords will blow up to the highest point.in 1 day but will reduce again in next day.

I like Google’s Real-Time search, it is just the beginning, they will find ways to set spam filters I am sure down the road to avoid having irrelevant updates show up on the front page of Google’s SERP’s. Just my opinion…
But the best thing about Google’s Real-Time Search results is the fact that you can tweet something and be on the front page of google seconds later, just gotta keep tweeting popular terms that people search for!

It may be true to a certain extent that Google can predict hot searches. But that can only be based on the previous statistics and metrics. No way does it mean that it will be true all the time. The trend keeps changing from time to time. Nothing can be 100% predictable.
