Caffeine might just affect SEO

With so much emphasis on search engine optimization (SEO) in recent years, companies have worked hard to get their keywords to rank high in SERPs, but will all that be for naught if Google adds “Caffeine?”

On their company blog, Mike Dobbs and Martha Mukangara of 360i write that a change to Google’s Caffeine would “substantially” affect search rankings for keywords.

By comparing 40 retail keywords in Google “Decaf” versus the beta version of Google Caffeine, 360i found that there was about a 15 percent shift in first page rankings.

There also appears to be more relevance placed on Universal results, meaning that SERPs will contain more instances of videos, news, images, books, blogs and local search results, according to 360i.

When looking at the Universal results from Caffeine, it appears that an increasing emphasis is being put on news. 360i notes that currently news makes up about 1 percent of web listings but in Caffeine, news jumps to 5 percent.

Since it was first introduced earlier this month, SEOs have argued that Caffeine will mark a dramatic change in rankings if it were to go live. In a post for PC World, David Coursey called Caffeine “potentially a very big deal” for businesses that rely on their search rankings in Google.

I think having more news results is going to be generally a good thing for search. Let’s face it, when we’re actually looking for something online we don’t want a full list of affiliate sites….Caffeine may help that somewhat. It is going to make the ability to write press releases that much more important though!

I never heard of this Caffeine thing you’re talking about until I read your post. But I trust that Google knows what they’re doing as they give excellent results right now. So if they change anything, it would have to be an improvement unless they become fools. So yes, it might very well affect those of us who try to optimize sites for search engines. But all this means is that we’ll just have to employ new strategies. We’ve had to do this all the time, as algorithms are constantly being changed and fine-tuned. I also doubt google will do anything that will change things to much.

They each developed their own short-list of the factors enabling them to offer relevant web results when users use their system to find information. These indicators are updated, upgraded or becomes obsolete in a regular basis. What about these indicators often creates SEO myths that only add confusion to this inexact science.

    Hi,

For months that a more proeminent approach to quality and relevance in terms of content on Google’s part has been mentioned.
If you ask me if I agree with this, my answer is yes.
When someone searches the net, the objective usually is to reach the website(s) that will present the best content according to the search parameters and not to be taken by a less quality information only because that site has thousands of inbound links.
Of course that in terms of branding/names/domains, things have to be well calculated, so that the owners may have their brands shown on first pages.
Things will always be changing and will never be perfect, so if you are selling something, don’t forget the offline marketing.

    Best regards,

    José

Caffeine is definitely going to affect SEO. Well, at least as our role as consultants, we need to be aware of what changes are going into effect. One big change will be a pages load time. Make sure you don’t have huge images condensed into small images, instead, shrink them yourselves and load the smaller sized file.

    Hi,

With the last pagerank update we saw many blogs losing positions, some of them with great surprise.
This may be a consequence of what Google has been telling for over a year or so : pay attention to content, namely its quality and relevancy.
I believe that the same is going with search results; this also combined with “trends”.
My advise for those who lack the technical knowledge continues to be the same : write regularly, with quality and offer relevant content.
Also try to be original, even if it’s quite difficult these days.

    Regards,

    José

Caffeine is being rolled out in 1 data centre first but after 01 Jan 2010 because of all the grief Google got a while back which crippled a lot of on-line marketers and webmasters when they released a SERP update just before the holiday season.

I do believe it will affect the SERPs on a medium scale-only if it didn’t why are they holding back until after the holidays?

Caffeine is a test version of the Google indexing and ranking system, not an upgrade of the Google user interface. For many queries that I ran, the top entries were identical, and result pages look the same.

Caffeine is already in news of every SEO expert and most of them have started working out the plans for it. I guess all must be waiting for it. SEO people will not have to work as hard as it is now, relevancy is the factor that Caffeine is going to work hard on.

I can see this would make sense from the browser’s perspective (even if the SEO side of me is terrified)

    Case in point of browsing.
I find that when I am say, looking up info for WarCraft regarding making a macro or looking for the latest version of a mod.

I often see outdated information outrank more current and accurate info.
Some topics shift and change month by month, week by week.

Google’s stance in the past has been: anything newer then 6 months can’t be trusted.

Looks like Caffeine is their attempt to strike a balance?

  138. Google Caffeine is Here Said,

    December 15, 2009 @ 11:41 am

It’s not just Caffeine that will change SEO. It’s hyperlocal content, real-time results, and perhaps a few pending privacy concerns.

It is hard to say how this will all play out but Google will someday soon be much less popular than they are now. Look at AOL, Lycos, and Microsoft. They all had their time in the sun, it’s fast, intense, and temporary. Especially when Erik Schmidt is dropping comments like he recently did on Privacy resulting in Firefox defaulting to Bing now.

On my site, I talk about how this will drive people to Pay-Per-Click which is a big plus for Google. However, I don’t think the two are related. When you are as big as Google every turn you take has a result and a reaction. It’s just the ebb and flow baby, ebb and flow.

Yes, the video and blog and social pages are becoming more relevant now. Also the local aspects of search, which is good for the user. Google is making the Yellow Pages obsolete. Which having been a business owner for fifteen years, doesn’t really break my heart one bit.

SEO is the medium to promote your website in order to have high rankings.Make sure to research the potential advantages as well as the damage that an irresponsible SEO can do to your site. Many SEOs and other agencies and consultants provide useful services for website owners. However, a good SEO can also help improve an existing site.
