Portable Document Format

PDF Conversion is quiet popular now. Portable Document Format is a file format created by Adobe Systems in 1993 for document exchange. PDF is used for representing two-dimensional documents in a manner independent of the application software, hardware, and operating system. Each PDF file encapsulates a complete description of a fixed-layout 2D document that includes the text, fonts, images, and 2D vector graphics which compose the documents. Formerly a proprietary format, PDF was officially released as an open standard on July 1, 2008, and published by the International Organization for Standardization as ISO/IEC 32000-1:2008.

PDF’s adoption in the early days of the format’s history was slow. Adobe Acrobat, Adobe’s suite for reading and pdf creator , was not freely available; early versions of PDF had no support for external hyperlinks, reducing its usefulness on the World Wide Web; the additional size of the PDF document compared to plain text meant significantly longer download times over the slower modems common at the time, and rendering the files was slow on less powerful machines. Additionally, there were competing formats such as Envoy, Common Ground Digital Paper and even Adobe’s own PostScript format (.ps); in those early years, the PDF file was mainly popular in desktop publishing workflow.

Adobe soon started distributing its Adobe PDF Reader program at no cost, and continued supporting the original PDF, which eventually became the de facto standard for printable documents on the web.

Well, if you created a simple Microsoft Word Document, and add some bling-bling fonts, a glowing and shiny page background, you’ll lost them all if you open it on another computer which doesn’t have those fonts in its system.

PDF or Portable Document Format is a file format created by Adobe Systems in 1993 for document exchange and distribution. It is a well known file format used for representing two dimensional documents in a manner independent of the application software, hardware and operating system. The PDF file format is popular because of their reliability, cross-platform support, and protection of copyright. But of course, PDF files would not exist without the best creators of PDF form. Whether at home or office, the creators of PDF is an essential tool on any computer.

Even more reason why Adobe should open-source the PDF format. It’s too risky for one company to control it.

    Hi,
Advantages with PDF are ,PDF files can be filled out online, then printed. HTML files must be printed, then filled out by hand.Once the RATES fields are filled in, the amounts are automatically calculated. But check the math.
Disadvantages include ,PDF files can be read only with a PDF Reader such as Adobe Reader 5.0 or above. If you can’t load a PDF file, use the HTML file.

It is a good tool for creating archives of documents that can be mailed, and though there is software to alter them, the pdf’s are for the most part secure documents. What I don’t like is the way acrobat and the free adobe reader has become bloatware, and how it tries to bundle software on install. I have used foxit on computers that don’t need to create, just to read these files.
