Google helps predict hot search topics

Google has developed a formula to predict the hot topics of online search in what promises to be a boon for companies wishing to target ads that accompany search results on the Internet. Engineers at Google’s laboratory in Israel came up with a forecasting model, while the study of past and current search patterns are reliable clues to what people seek online in coming months. The findings resulted in a new function of the forecast this week for analysis of search in Google.

“We see many search trends are predictable, Yossi Matias, Niv Efron, Yair Shimshoni and the Google Labs in Israel, wrote in a message on the California titan’s website online. “We characterized the predictability of a number of trends on the basis of their historical development.”

Google Trends is a free online search shows what subjects are gaining in popularity or collapse. Outlook for search uses the same data, but is designed for advertisers and researchers who want to deepen. More than half of the most popular search queries on Google are predictable to the extent that a year earlier, with a margin of error of about 12 percent, according to the laboratory engineers Israel.

Categories such as health, travel, food and beverages are particularly predictable, while searches in connection with the entertainment and social networks have proven more difficult to predict, the team said.

Did anyone try Caffeine?

From Google Blog

For the last several months, a large team of Googlers has been working on a secret project: a next-generation architecture for Google’s web search. It’s the first step in a process that will let us push the envelope on size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness and other dimensions. The new infrastructure sits “under the hood” of Google’s search engine, which means that most users won’t notice a difference in search results. But web developers and power searchers might notice a few differences, so we’re opening up a web developer preview to collect feedback.

Some parts of this system aren’t completely finished yet, so we’d welcome feedback on any issues you see. We invite you to visit the web developer preview of Google’s new infrastructure at http://www2.sandbox.google.com/ and try searches there.

How Device Drivers Work?

Device drivers are used by the operating system to interact with hardware. The operating system uses functions in the driver to carry out actions on the hardware. Each driver has different functions, and each function corresponds to different hardware. For example, sound drivers helps take care of audio hardware and video drivers take care of the display.

The computer drivers create DOs, short for device objects, for each piece of hardware that it controls. To the driver, the DO is a representation of that specific hardware. The device objects are contained in a device stack. The are the FDO-upper level filter driver, FDO-function driver, Filter DO-bus filter driver, and PDO-bus driver. The stack is made up of DOs for handling an input/output (I/O) for each device.

The physical structure of a device driver is made up of a user mode, I/O manager, and a kernel mode.Breakdown of modes:API–programming application the operating system uses to start the I/O manager.Ntdll–Function library that uses stubs to start the operating system.NtReadFile–System used to create and control I/O requests.I/O Manager–Subsystem in charge of all devices that decides what each driver is allowed to do.IRP–Request packet used by the I/O to ask for information from drivers.IoCallDriver–Sends IRPs to the correct driver that is associated with each DO.In the user mode, the application connects to the API, which connects to the Ntdll. The application request then moves into the kernel mode through the I/O manager. The I/O mangers uses a NTReadFile to process the request and sends it to the IOCallDriver, which in turn sends the information to the correct driver. The driver then decides what to do with the request. It will queue it for later, send it to a hardware port or send it to another driver.

Local Search Results - Not so impressive?

Local search is the use of specialized Internet search engines that allow users to submit geographically constrained searches against a structured database of local business listings. Typical local search queries include not only information about “what” the site visitor is searching for but also “where” information, such as a street address, city name, postal code, or geographic coordinates like latitude and longitude. Examples of local searches include “San Francisco hotels”, “Los Angeles Seo Company“, and “Las Vegas Hertz”.

Above image shows google local results fot the search term los angeles seo, and it seems that 5 out of the 10 listing are being optimized (marked in red) by search professionals, and keywords are being displayed instead of business names….

And its not so impressive :(

Fingerprint Locks?

Using your fingerprint to open a lock? These are all the rage among homebuyers. Would you like to have one of these on your house? I suppose you can always loose your key, but you always have your finger. Just Google and find the best one for you… http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Aaxxisbiometrics.com+fingerprint+lock

Sometime back, electronic fingerprint readers have been introduced for security applications such as identification of computer users (log-in authentication). However, early devices have been discovered to be vulnerable to quite simple methods of deception, such as fake fingerprints cast in gels. In 2006, fingerprint sensors gained popularity in the notebook PC market. Built-in sensors in ThinkPads, VAIO laptops, and others also double as motion detectors for document scrolling, like the scroll wheel.

Another recent use of fingerprints in a day-to-day setting has been the increasing reliance on biometrics in schools where fingerprints and, to a lesser extent, iris scans are used to validate electronic registration, cashless catering, and library access. This practice is particularly widespread in the UK, where more than 3500 schools currently use such technology, though it is also starting to be adopted in some states in the US.

Never worry about losing your keys or having to make extra sets for your guests anymore. Fingerprint Lock is the solution for everyone.

Adobe helps search engines to handle Flash

For most people on the Web, if Google or Yahoo cannot find something, it doesn’t exist. That has been one of the biggest drawbacks to creating a Website in Flash. Search engines could see the file, but they could not see what was in it. Until now.

Adobe today announced an optimized Adobe Flash Player that will be added to the search engines of Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc. under agreements with the two Internet firms. The tool will help the search engines better index dynamic Web content and rich Internet applications (RIA) that include the Flash file format, or Shockwave Flash (SWF).

Becoming visible is one thing, actually ranking highly is another. Google currently can find about 73 million Flash files on the Web. But until Adobe makes it easy for the average Webmaster or blogger to link deeply into those Flash files, they are not likely to appear at the top of many search results.

Google introduces new tool for planning Online Ads

Google wants to make it easier for marketers to pick appropriate Web sites for their online ads with a new tool it announced Tuesday called Ad Planner. It seems that Google is moving into the Web measurement market to compete against companies like Nielsen Online, comScore, Quantcast and Hitwise.

Using Google Ad Planner, you can quickly create media plans and export to a .csv file, which can be opened in most spreadsheet applications. Or, you can export to DoubleClick’s MediaVisor, which helps you manage all your other media planning, buying and campaign management activities.

For now, those interested in using Ad Planner need to submit a request to Google.
