Search Engine Optimisation A Waste of Time and Money

Just came across an idiotic article titled “Search Engine Optimisation A Waste of Time and Money, according to Warrington Web Works CEO” which includes the following example…

In order to prove what a waste of time and money search engine optimisation is, Anthony sat down and wrote his article, “SEO Mind Crime,” relaying the story he had heard from his client. He posted his article on Wednesday afternoon and as a test he told his readers to search for “SEO Mind Crime” on Google over the coming days. They didn’t have to wait long.

By late Thursday afternoon, UK time, just 24 hours after posting the article appeared at positions 3, 4 and 6 on Google’s first page. This out of 826,000 indexed pages, the ultimate proof why Search Engine Optimisation is no longer required in Web 2.0

This is an absolute stupid example. The article has ranked for the keyword ‘SEO Mind Crime’ which is not competitive at all. I would agree with Antony if he had got that page rank for the search term ‘SEO’. I would now wish to challenge him to go ahead and write an article on Phentermine or Gambling or Real Estate or even SEO. If his page ranks well so quickly, I’ll accept whatever he says.

NoFollow added to Wikipedia outgoing links :(

In an attempt to eliminate spamming, Wikipedia has added “nofollow” tag to all outbound links. The “nofollow” tag was introduced a while back for webmasters to tell the major search engines to ignore the specific link. When Google sees this tag, the outbound link is passed by as if it were regular text.

Thus, if you have links pointing in from Wikipedia they will be lost, at least in terms of helping with your SEO campaigns. Links come and go all the time, but to lose a Wikipedia link is a big deal as it is a highly regarded site in the eyes of the search engines and its credibility with Google would mean the link would have a significant ranking value.
